What do you do when you suffer from bouts of horrible acne, your skin is so oily it makes you look like you’re sweating all the time, and nothing you try seems to help?
You create your own skincare line, of course. That’s what Kelita, the founder of Yours Truly Organics, did.
Kelita is pretty demanding. Her products didn’t just need to be effective. They also needed to be gentle, cruelty-free and use natural ingredients whenever possible.
She also has pretty good taste. Just look at the packaging. So pretty! If I saw them in the shops, I’d be tempted to buy them just for that. Shallow, I know, but I’ve always been a magpie for beautiful packaging.
Yours Truly Organics is still a small line. There are only 5 products at the moment, and I had the chance to try them all. So, how did they fare?
Take It Away! Cleanser
Who says we have to leave the best for last? Let’s do that one first for a change.
So, what makes the Take It Away! Gel Cleanser the best product in the line?
The name, for starters. I just love it. Don’t you?
Ok, I know. Not a good enough reason to buy a cleanser. How about this then? It gently cleanses the skin, removing all traces of dirt and excess oil. But, it does leave enough natural oil behind to keep skin naturally soft and moisturized. There’s no tight feeling afterwards.
What makes this little miracle happen is a bunch of gentle surfactants that includes lauryl glucoside, cocamidopropyl betaine, and decyl glucoside. They’re all very mild, take away dirt and impurities, and foam quite well, too.
There’s only one thing they can’t do. They aren’t the best at removing makeup. But I use Take It Away! in the morning, so I don’t mind that.
What else? Oh, yes. The texture is just right. Neither too thick nor too slippery. And the orange scent smells amazing! (I know, citrusy stuff ain’t the best to put on your skin, but it smells so good, I just can’t resist it.)
Most of the time, I don’t bother with toner. I just don’t see the point of using one. Sadly, this toner didn’t make me change my mind.
Its texture is so watery you do need a cotton pad to apply it. It sinks in really quickly, but I can’t say it did anything for me.
I also wasn’t that pleased to see so many fragrant oils in here. Lavender, lemongrass, and patchouli all smell amazing, but some of their component (yep, natural ingredients are made up of tens of thousands of compounds – some good, some not so good), can be irritating if you have sensitive skin.
Fix Me! Repairing Serum
This serum is a bit of a mixed bag for me. It promises to reduce inflammation, yet it contains alcohol and citrus oils, which could cause inflammation. Mmm…
In its defence, it didn’t irritate my skin at all. I guess that’s because it is also loaded with anti-inflammatory ingredients, including aloe vera and oats. Yep, oats. They’re one of the most soothing ingredients used in skincare and a must for everyone with sensitive skin.
Then, there’s argan oil. Argan oil is a rich source of fatty acids, such as oleic, palmitic, and linoleic acids. That makes it a great moisturizer that makes even dry skin soft and smooth. It also contains vitamin E, phenols, carotenes, and ferulic acid, all powerful antioxidants that can prevent premature wrinkles.
The serum too has a lightweight texture that sinks immediately into the skin without leaving a greasy residue behind. It also makes my skin softer and smoother. All in all, the pros far outweigh the cons.
This is another win for me.
It’s an oil-based moisturizer, so I expected it to be really rich and creamy. Instead, the texture is surprisingly lightweight and absorbs quickly into the skin, leaving a subtle matte (yep, matte) finish behind.
The stars here are cocoa seed butter and jojoba oil. They both form a barrier on the skin that prevents water loss. That’s how they keep skin soft and hydrated.
Moisturizing skin is something this balm does really well. I apply the tiniest amount in the morning and, by the time I go to bed, my skin is still soft and smooth. At no point during the day I feel like I need to give it another dose of moisture. It already has all it needs.
This is the newest product from the line.
It’s an anti-blemish treatment that comes with its own roll-on applicator. So convenient to apply!
But, does it work? Mmmm….
It’s hard to tell. The key ingredient here is willow bark extract. When you ingest it, your body transforms willow bark extract into salicylic acid. If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you’ll know this is an exfoliant that can treat breakouts. It does so by getting inside the pores and getting rid of all the stuff that’s clogging them up.
But, I couldn’t find any proof that this conversion happens when willow bark is topically applied on the skin too. And it’s not like there’s much willow bark extract in this treatment anyway…
But, it may not be completely useless. Willow bark extract also has anti-inflammatory properties, so that can help bring down the inflammation that always comes with pimples.
These days I get blemishes only during that time of the month. So, when that happened, I applied the treatment to my pimples twice a day, once in the morning and the other at night. I used it straight after cleansing to maximize the penetration of its ingredients.
Did it work? Sort of. My pimples seemed to disappear that tiny bit faster. But I’m still sticking to sulfur. That does the job a lot more quickly.
Let’s recap. If you can only get one product from this line, make it the Take It Away! Gel Cleanser. If you can get two, add the Face Balm. I know you’ll love them too.
