yesterday, I shared with you my favourite beauty products of 2013. Now, it’s time to see which ones, instead, were disappointing. As I usually research products before purchasing, I rarely come across duds. But you can’t avoid them completely.
So, here are those that made it into the Worst of Beauty list this year (and, again, these are products I’ve tried, but weren’t necessarily released, in 2013):
1. Astor Pure Color Eye Shadow in 130 Cocoa Rose
This eyeshadow duo, embossed with a floral pattern, looks absolutely gorgeous in his sleek black compact. Unfortunately, the soft lilac and peach shades are so sheer that, no matter how many layers you apply, they barely show up even on very fair skin. They can only be used by pale princesses to achieve a “no makeup look”. To everyone else, the duo’s useless.
2. Maybelline Color Tattoo Metal 24HR Cream Gel Eyeshadow in Gold Rush
I’m usually a huge fan of the Maybelline Color Tattoo eyeshadows. They’re among the very few cream eyeshadows that last long, without creasing, on my somewhat oily lids. But every line has a dud. Gold Rush is a stunning gold shade with a very poor formula that stubbornly applies unevenly, giving your eyelids an unappealing wrinkled look. Boo!
3. NYC High Definition Separating Mascara
This mascara separates lashes very well indeed. Too bad that’s all it does. It doesn’t provide any volume, and barely any length at all. Like that wasn’t enough, it also clumps. Oh, and did I mention that it flakes throughout the day? There are much better mascaras out there, even at this low price point.
4. Pantene Pro-V Classic Care 2 In 1 Shampoo + Conditioner
This 2 in 1 shampoo leaves your hair squeaky clean. That’s “thanks” to the harsh surfactant Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, which can, however, also irritate skin and dry out hair. Unfortunately, the poor conditioning properties of this shampoo aren’t enough to prevent the latter. Sporadic use may leave your hair looking and feeling fine, but, in the long term, it may do more harm than good.
5. Etat Libre D’Orange Secretions Magnifiques
I wasn’t sure whether to include this fragrance in this list. After all, I gave it a rating of 4 out of 5. But that’s because, as a budding perfumista, I much prefer an original but stinky scent to a boring but pleasant-smelling one. This scent, inspired by body secretions, deserves praise for its originality indeed. Unfortunately, it smells awful. It deserves a sniff, but nothing more than that. Having said that, Etat Libre D’Orange is one of my fave fragrance niche brands, so you’ll find plenty other scents in the line that are creative but still manage to smell gorgeous!
6. Programme Solaire Latte Solare Spray SPF 25
What’s the point of a sunscreen that doesn’t offer broad spectrum protection? This one has a lightweight texture that sinks quickly into the skin without leaving a greasy residue behind, but only offers protection against sunburn-causing UVB rays and short UVA rays. Your skin will still be exposed to long UVA rays and the damage, such as premature aging and cancer, they can cause.
