Name: Essenza Di Roma Uomo
Brand: Laura Biagiotti
What I liked:
- if you like sweet and aromatic wood scents, this is for you
- the scent is sweet, but in a masculine way
- can be easily worn by women too
- good sillage and staying power
What I didn’t like:
- if you dislike sweet woody scents with a floral heart, stay away from it
- not particularly original
This year, Laura Biagiotti, one of the largest fashion houses in Italy, turns 25. To celebrate this important milestone, the brand has released a new duo of scents, Essenza Di Roma (Essence of Rome) for women and Essenza Di Roma for men. Like the name suggests, Essenza Di Roma was inspired by the classic and timeless beauty of Rome with its ancient monuments and stunning sights, but also pays homage to the Dolce Vita, the legendary decadent, glamorous and passionate period embodied in Fellini’s movie.
As such, the fragrances are targeted to the modern man and woman who are looking for elegance and pleasure in everyday life. The male version, which I had the chance to try, is also genderless. Well, it is advertised as a masculine scent, but it’s one that a woman, because of its sweetness, can effortlessly wear too. Don’t get me wrong now. The scent is sweet, but it’s not sickly sweet. This is not a fruity floral or a gourmand concoction, but an aromatic woody blend with a floral heart. It’s sweet but in a way that won’t put men off. After all, it was created with them in mind.
Laura Biagiotti Essenza Di Roma Uomo starts with an aromatic green note of bay leaf. In the background, there’s a really soft and subtle citrusy scent (lemon?) mixed with something dusty. This dustiness, which is actually quite pleasant, will hang around till the end. After 15 minutes, the geranium begins to bloom, lending a certain sweetness to the composition that, again, will linger for hours. You can still smell a remnant of the bay leaf, which is what prevents Essenza Di Roma Uomo from getting too sweet.
The drydown is a sweet and balsamic blend of woods and vanilla, with a touch of courmarin, which, again, ensures the scent remains, but only slightly, on the masculine end of the spectrum. Essenza Di Roma Uomo is a warm, cozy scent that would work best on early autumn days when the weather is getting chiller and the leaves are starting to fall from the trees. For summer, I’d stick to the original Roma Uomo, which is brighter and more citrusy. Essenza Di Roma, though, has good sillage and excellent staying power. I spritz it on in the morning, and it stays with me until evening.
