buxom lip tarnish scandal 01

Name: Big & Healthy Lip Tarnish in Scandal
Brand: Bare Escentuals Buxom
Size: 0.1oz
Price: $19.00

From Sephora’s website:
Buxom® Big & Healthy™ Lip Tarnish takes color to a new level. It tints like a stain, shines like a gloss, moisturizes like a balm, and plumps like nobody’s business. Your full color and shine isn’t going anywhere. A built-in sharpener keeps your creamy pencil perfectly prepped for whatever shenanigans arise.

What I liked:
– nice and wearable rosy mauve shade with a wet-look finish
– creamy texture, glides easily on the lips
– good staying power
– has a slight plumping effect
– sleek and shiny packaging features an in-built sharpener in the cap

What I didn’t like:
– the plumping effect may be too subtle for some people
– not very moisturizing

Bare Escentuals Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Tarnish is a hybrid product that promises to tint like a stain, shine like a gloss, moisturize like a lip balm and plump lips too. But can it really do all these things? Well not really, but it does most of them, and very well too!

The shade I have, which was given to me by my friend Janessa, is Scandal. Described as “mauve”, it’s more of a dark rosy plum on my lips. It’s a few shades darker than my own lip colour and looks very natural and pretty on. The pencil has great colour payoff and, because of its chubby size, it is easy to quickly apply a layer of colour that stains your lips and lasts reasonably on.

I get about three and a half hours of wear, compared to the two I get from most lip colours. In addition, Scandal also has a wet-look finish that makes lips shine in a natural way. But while Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Tarnish really works like a stain and a lipgloss, it can’t really replace a lip balm. The texture is creamy and glides smoothly on the lips, but it is not very moisturizing.

It’s not very effective as a lip plumper either. Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Tarnish contains Menthone Glycerin Acetal, a derivative of menthol that causes lips to swell by irritating them. There’s not much of it in the formula, so the plumping effect is subtle. Menthone Glycerin Acetal also provides a refreshing and painless tingling sensation to the lips. Just don’t apply more than one coat or it’ll sting.

The packaging is very shiny and sleek but bulky. That’s because Bare Escentuals has decided to include a sharpener in the cap, which takes up quite a bit of space. On the plus side, this means that you can sharpen, and easily apply, the pencil wherever you are, whenever you need to. How handy is that?

Available at:

Bare Escentuals Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Tarnish in Scandal stains lips with a rosy plum colour with a wet shiny finish that lasts for about 3 hours and a half. The texture is creamy, gliding smoothly on the lips, but not very moisturizing. The plumping effect is very subtle too.

Trisha, it’s a very pretty shade indeed. And very pigmented and longlasting too. This time, Buxom has made a great job!

Monica, it’s very pretty, isn’t it? I haven’t tried the Tarte pencils, but I’m very impressed with the Buxom one. I’m sure you’ll like it too.
