Product Review: Sunumbra Sunscreen SPF30+

sunumbra sunscreen 30+

Name: Sunscreen SPF30+
Brand: Sunumbra
Size: 100ml
Price: $29.70

From Sunumbra’s wesbite:
Sunumbra spf30+provides…
– effective, stable, high level protection against both UVA and UVB radiation
– protection from free radical damage and atmospheric toxins
– active natural nutrients to reverse the effects of radiation damage
– that every ingredient offers a clear and direct benefit and is not merely included to ‘look good’

What I liked:
– offers effective broad spectrum protection
– contains natural extracts with antioxidants, soothing and sun-protective properties
– easy to apply, spreads evenly on the skin
– doesn’t leave a white cast on skin
– doesn’t cause breakouts
– eye-catching and hygienic packaging

What I didn’t like:
– texture is greasy and takes a while to sink into the skin

My favourite sunscreen ingredient is Zinc Oxide. This white mineral can, on its own, protect against the entire UV spectrum and is very gentle, so it won’t cause irritations. Unfortunately, it can also leave a ghastly and unattractive white cast on the skin, which is why a lot of people prefer to avoid this ingredient. But luckily, with Sunumbra Sunscreen SPF30+ that’s not a problem.

This sunscreen doesn’t leave any white residue on the skin. In fact, the cream isn’t white at all. It’s a soft brown, mocha colour. And no, it won’t leave a brownish cast either. Not only Sunumbra Sunscreen SPF30+ gives your skin all the benefits of Zinc Oxide, minus the white cast, but it also contains a bunch of natural extracts, such as Broccoli Sprout Extract, Black Tea Extract and Allantoin, that helps protect your skin from sun damage too.

According to a 2007 study, Broccoli Sprout Extract “markedly reduces the inflammation and cell damage caused by UV rays” by boosting “the production of a network of protective enzymes inside cells that defend cells against many aspects of UV damage”. Black Tea extract has both antioxidant and sun-protective properties. A study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science has found that Black Tea Extract “prevents the skin damage and sunburn by absorbing UV rays and secondly, it repairs UV induced damage to the skin cells.” Allantoin, instead, can soften skin and soothe irritations.

So, it has a great formula, but is it pleasant to use too? The cream, which has a pleasant and delicate herbal scent that doesn’t hang around long, has a rich texture that spreads easily and unevenly on the skin. Unfortunately, the consistency is also greasy and sinks into the skin slowly, so your face (and any other area you applied it on) may feel only for a while. I know this can be a problem for some people, but to me, it is only a small inconvenience to put with compared with all the benefits this sunscreen provides.

Caprylic Capric triglycerides, De-ionized water, Zinc oxide, Sorbitan olivate, Allantoin, Black Tea Extract, Kigelia extract, Broccoli sprout extract, Green rooibos extract, Aloe ferox extract, Dimethicone, Cape chamomile oil.

Although Sunumbra Sunscreen SPF30+ has a greasy texture that takes a while to sink into the skin, its wonderful Zinc Oxide formula, enriched with natural extracts, will help prevent and reduce sun damage and soothe skin. And it doesn’t leave an unattractive white cast on the skin.

Marisa, it is a great sunscreen indeed. It has all the benefits of physical sunscreen ingredients, without the cons.
