Sunday Random Ramblings, Vol.59

Hello everyone,

it’s that time of the week again when we can just ramble on and on about anything. Let’s get started then:

Jenny Packham

jenny packham
Jenny Packham is one of my favourite designers. I love her style: her clothes are luxurious, elegant, decadent and very feminine. And the attention to detail is extraordinary. Packham often uses delicate beadwork and embroidery, intricate lace patterns and draping fabrics in her dresses. She often designs quite a lot of glittery dresses too, and yet they all look classy and never vulgar, which is no mean feat. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to afford one of her dresses, but luckily for us Jenny has teamed up with Dehenhams to create an affordable collection that’s called No.1 Jenny Packham. The quality isn’t the same obviously, but the dresses are all inspired by pieces of her older collections and are much cheaper! Do you like Jenny Packham?

What I’m Reading Now

great britain and her queen
Great Britain And Her Queen by Annie E. Keeling. For some reason, I thought this was a short biography of Queen Victoria, but not really. Instead, it’s more of a summary of all the events the happened during the Victorian era: the wars the English empire was involved in, the history of its colonies, the inventions that changed people’s lives, the reforms that were brought about to try and solve the many problems of the age… There is also some brief information about Queen Victoria, but it’s mostly a chronicle of her children’s births and marriages, and of the bereavements she suffered during her life. At the end, there’s also a brief history of the Methodist Church. The writer style is archaic and convoluted and not really very engaging. Overall, I’d recommend it only to those who want to read a brief account of the Victorian era and don’t mind the old-fashioned writing style. If you’re interested, the book is available for free at Project Gutenberg.

Sunday Survey, Vol.138

1. Do you send postcards when on holidays?
I used to, but these days I do only when someone asks. Otherwise, I’ll just show them the pictures/videos I’ve taken with my camera when I come back.

2. Do you worry about signs of aging?
I’m not scared of growing older and getting wrinkles. It’s a natural process. I wear sunscreen and use products with antioxidants to slow aging down, but I’m not freaked out by the few wrinkles that are slowly starting to appear around my eyes, and I definitely have no intention of going under the knife in the future.

3. What sunscreen are you using at the moment?
Sunumbra SPF30+ sunscreen, an organic sunscreen with zinc oxide. So far, it’s working well. I’m impressed.

4. Chocolate chip cookie or Oreo cookie?
Chocolate chip cookie, please!

5. What do you think of statement earpieces?
I love this trend! It’s cool and fun!

I’ve been looking for ear-cuffs for years and I hope the time has finally come for the trend to find its way to out market, too <3 .

The illustration accompanying that Healing Feet article is disturbing – I've only recently started wearing heels and people told me that the pains I was feeling were just 'training pains'.
I hope they were right, but I'll try to stay off the heels as much as possible.

It's a bit hard when society treats heels, no matter how painful or ugly as “better” than flats *sigh* .

Ana, I hope they will arrive in your neck of the woods soon. They’re really cool, aren’t they?

I think the trick with heels is to wear them in moderation. If you wear them every now and then, then they may feel painful, especially if they’re new, but they won’t cause any serious, permanent damage. It’s when you wear them everyday, and do a lot of walking in them, that the problems start…

And I agree. That’s annoying too. We have to wear heels, miniskirts, a full of face of makeup…. Argh! We should just be able to wear what we like and is appropriate to the occasion without anyone judging.

Wear whatever you like. If you’re comfortable, that shows, and that’s always attractive!

Some people should not wear heels, period. Ever. Flat-footed people especially should never wear heels. I’m lucky; I have ridiculous Barbie-feet with arches that fall (PAIN) if I wear less than a 2″ heel. Bad news: my job is currently a flats-only environment. Others have a rough time with anything that isn’t a flat shoe. If you’re going to get heels, most of the ones I have pain with come in two varieties; either they’re too narrow and pinch, or they have NO cushioning in them, especially prevalent in cheap shoes, and that WILL hurt your feet as if you’re walking barefooted on your toes.

Strangely enough, “porn shoes” have never had either problem on me. The women who wear them regularly NEED cushioning and a good fit to be able to work. Some come in relatively low heights and aren’t shiny. If you want height, you can look for shoes with chunkier heels that won’t get stuck in sidewalk cracks with a front platform. That way, the actual rise of the foot is not very high, but you still get the benefit of a taller appearance. You might have to try on plenty of shoes, though. Make sure you buy them late in the day, when your feet have expanded from swelling. Don’t get anything too loose, but don’t buy them too tight either, and if in doubt, don’t buy them at all!

Books – I have started reading Perks Of Being A Wallflower and already finished 35%.

    1. Do you send postcards when on holidays? I used to send them every holidays but not so much these days.
    2. Do you worry about signs of aging? Luckily, I don’t have to worry about it just yet.
    3. What sunscreen are you using at the moment? I don’t use a separate one, my creams are all with spf.
    4. Chocolate chip cookie or Oreo cookie? I like brownies the best. btw, if you love chocolate cookies, try these, they are REALLY good and easy to make https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvIG7R8DOqU
    5. What do you think of statement earpieces? I like them occasionally.

Marina, how are you liking the book?

And thank you for the recipe! They look delicious! I will definitely be making them soon.

    1. Do you send postcards when on holidays? Not anymore. I used to send a lot of them when I was a kid but times changed now. :)
    2. Do you worry about signs of aging? Hmm….I admit that I don’t like the idea of having wrinkles but I’m aware that this is a natural sign of aging and for me I guess it matters that I want to grow old nicely, with a good skincare routine. I haven’t considered any plastic surgeries and I don’t think I will.
    3. What sunscreen are you using at the moment? None :( I don’t get out of the house so much lately and when I do it’s already night :)
    4. Chocolate chip cookie or Oreo cookie? Both :)
    5. What do you think of statement earpieces? They are OK by me, even though I never wear them, I guess it requires a certain attitude and outfit :)

Tavia, times have changed indeed. It was really fun to choose and write postcards, but I guess now that we can easily take hundreds of pictures and videos with our phones and cameras, they aren’t really necessary anymore.

  4. says

I love that first dress! Especially if it came in grey with dark blue, silver, and purple beading… You really have a thing for royalty and historical fiction, don’t you? You might like “The Tale of Genji”. There are a lot of edits and translations, but it’s about court life in Heian (T’ang era in China) era in Japan. Think 3-15 layers of kimono, trailing embroidered trains called ‘mo’, and a society of both men AND women who were fully literate and expected to be able to write poetry tastefully and in season as a sign of intelligence and grace.

    1. Do you send postcards when on holidays?
Not usually. I did when I went to Japan, though!

    2. Do you worry about signs of aging?
Ohhh yeah. I’ve had lines in my face since I was about 12, partially from not being able to see (and not having access to medical help for glasses, an unthinkable expense back then), but partially from FL being at the top of the UV charts every day.

    3. What sunscreen are you using at the moment?
L’Oreal, but only when my skin is dry. Otherwise, I get so oily that I tend to break out. Most sunscreens mess with my skin, too, so I usually use a powdered makeup with zinc oxide in it.

    4. Chocolate chip cookie or Oreo cookie?
Chocolate chip. I make them with crushed toffee.

    5. What do you think of statement earpieces?
I have a love for snake earrings, and some of the ones I’ve seen lately are gorgeous! The wrap-around style is one of my favourite, but it’s important to have balance- unless you have asymmetrically cut hair, then go for it!
