Product Review: Dolce & Gabbana Pour Femme Fragrance

Name: Dolce & Gabbana Pour Femme
Brand: Dolce & Gabbana
Size: 1.07oz
Price: $77.00

What I liked:
– lovely fruity floral scent
– longlasting
– elegant and sleek bottle

What I didn’t like:
– very predictable and unoriginal

Fragrances get reformulated all the time. Sometimes, an ingredient may become scarce, or even get banned, while others fragrances are “updated” to modern tastes. That’s the case with the Dolce & Gabbana fragrance. Originally released in 1992, the fragrance was reformulated, or as Stefano Gabbana put it, fine-tuned, last year. “We altered the bottle a bit.…” said the designer. “There has been an evolution [of the brand] since the Nineties, Domenico and I were much younger then — we’ve really matured a lot.”

Well, Stefano and Domenico may have matured, but their fragrance, now named Dolce & Gabbana Pour Femme, certainly hasn’t. On the contrary, the original heady, sensual and full of character fragrance that was worn by independent, sexy and confident women has now become a sweet fruity floral concoction that would appeal mostly to teenage girls. If you like that sort of thing, you’ll gladly welcome this change, but every perfumista can’t help but wish they had kept the original alone (or at least changed it only slightly) and released a separate fragrance for a younger audience. As it is, this doesn’t smell anything like something a woman who wears Dolce & Gabbana would use.

So, what does it smell like? Pour Femme opens with a strong, sweet and bright blend of raspberry and neroli dusted with a generous dose of sugar. The heart is a creamy bouquet of jasmine and orange blossom that smells quite powdery. The drydown is even more predictable: a huge dollop of vanilla and a hint of white musk. It’s very sugary, almost to the point of becoming gourmand. Dolce & Gabbana Pour Femme smells lovely, but is nothing new. And it certainly wasn’t needed. Not in a market that is already oversaturated with sweet floral fruity fragrances. You can easily find the same thing at a much cheaper price. But at least it has good staying power and will cling to your skin for about 10 hours.

Available at: sephora and ulta

Dolce & Gabbana Pour Femme, which is packaged in an elegant and sleek bottle, is a sweet fruity floral scent with impressive staying power that will appeal mostly to young women. However, there’s nothing original or remarkable about it.

Ah, your fabulous writing! I love that you said the perfume wouldn’t be found on someone actually wearing Dolce and Gabbana. So true for too many perfume brands. 😀
“creamy bouquet… dollop of vanilla… gourmand” <3 these words.

Janessa, aww thank you. You’re too kind! And it’s really annoying when brands do that, isn’t it? A lot of people start by turning to their favourite designers when looking for a perfume, and sadly they’ll often be disappointed as even brands known for their edgier style just release the same sweet floral concotions when it comes to perfume. *sighs*

I couldn’t agree with you more – in fact, I started a FB page in the hope that we can bring the 1992 formulation back!! It is crazy that they would toy with an established classic…It was my signature fragrance, and I would constantly get complimented on it. Maybe we don’t want to be sugary teens anymore? Chanel kept No 5. Dior kept it’s many classics. Estee Lauder kept White Linen and Youth Dew. I totally agree that they could have released this scent as a separate line and not as a replacement for a fragrance so many of us loved!

Sophia, I feel your pain. This was a wonderful scent, and they ruined it. Unfortunately brands follow the money and super sweet, girly scents is what sells most these days. But classics shouldn’t be messed with. They should have just released a new scent. That would have pleased everyone. I wish you every success with your efforts to bring the original version back. :)
