Name: Hypnose Star Mascara
Brand: Lancome
Size: 6ml
Price: €28.00

From Lancome’s website:
Intense Volume, Curled Lashes.
Get your star lash look with the new dual-sided brush. Lashes are enhanced with a liner effect, looking thick at the lashline, long and luscious through the tips.

What I liked:
- the wand is amazing
- adds length, and a bit of volume
- separates lashes well
- holds a curl well for the whole day
- colour is very pigmented
- lasts long without smudging
- glittery packaging

What I didn’t like:
- doesn’t add as much volume as promised so the effect is very dramatic
- clumps a bit when you build it up
- the price

Want lashes like Betty Boop? The glamorous cartoon star has inspired Lancome to create Hypnose Star, a new mascara which promises to provide intense volume and curled lashes for Hollywood-style eyes. Lancome rarely disappoints when it comes to mascaras, but still I wasn’t prepared to splurge on it without trying it out first. The opportunity came last month when Grazia magazine (which is still lying unread somewhere in my room) offered a sample size of it. I eagerly grabbed it and put it to the test.

So, will I be getting the full size?

I’m not sure. I like it a lot, but it needs a bit of work to perform its best.

The star of Hypnose Star is undoubtedly the wand. It has a triangular shape and four sides. Two of them are flat and the other two rounded. Basically, you first apply mascara at the base of the lashes with the flat side, and then with the round side you work the product up to the tips. This provides length, definition and curl. See what I meant when I said it required a bit of work? I’m not sure if I can be bothered to use this technique every day (I’m kinda lazy lol), but the result is worth it.

Although Hypnose Star didn’t provide as much volume as I expected, it added quite a lot of length to my lashes. The wand, which does a great job at capturing all the lashes, even tiny ones, also separates them well, adding definition. It also does curl them somewhat, but I still recommend you use an eyelash curler for better results. The mascara will easily hold the curl from it for the entire day. And if you want a more dramatic effect, you can always built up, but I wouldn’t apply more than three coats as by then it tends to clump a bit. Nothing the wand can’t fix though.

The formula, which is neither too thick nor too dry, feels lightweight on the lashes and doesn’t weight them down. It doesn’t have a very glossy finish, but the black colour is very pigmented and intense. On me, Lancome Hypnose Star lasts for the entire day so there is no need to touch it up. And unlike my friend Brittany, I didn’t experience any flaking nor smudging.

Available at: boots, nordstrom and sephora

Summary
Lancome Hypnose Star Mascara has a nice formula and a triangular wand with two flat sides and two round sides, which coats every lash with an intense black colour that stays put for the entire day. The mascara provides length, definition and holds a curl well, but it doesn’t provide as much volume as promised. It’s a great mascara but if you want that false lashes look, this won’t deliver it.

Rating: 3.5/5

This mascara totally brought your lashes out there – way more than mine but I totally know what you mean about about the volume bit. Looks like we’re mascara twins in that regard. :)

Brittany, yep, we both love voluminous lashes and it’s a shame when a mascara that promises that doesn’t deliver.

With the lashes you have, there’s definitely better mascara for them (as in Hypnose Star did not do them justice)! I feel like this mascara took volume away from your full lashes and just clumped them together.

Janessa, the clumping is more my fault than the mascara’s. I still have trouble separating the inner lashes, doesn’t matter what mascara I use lol. I guess it’s because they actually look ok in real life, but when you take a close photo, all the flaws become so obvious lol. But yes, the mascara gets a bit clumpy after 2/3 coats and it doesn’t do much in terms of volume. I think the result is nice, but not what was promised.

i remember my first expensive mascara also from Lancome, i loved the wand! but soon I realized, maybeline mascaras work about the same, if not better, at only half or 1/3 of the price

Xin, I agree. I love Lancome mascaras but you can find great alternatives at much cheaper prices, which is why I rarely splurge on a full-size tube.

Not very convincing for a Lancome mascara but oh well, perhaps they improve the clumpy formula one day. :-)

Mylanqolia, this is not very clumpy at all if you use only one coat. But then it’s not as volumising as it promises to be, which is quite disappointing.
