Sunday Random Ramblings, Vol.48

Hello everyone,

happy Sunday! I hope you’re all having a lovely, relaxing day. Grab a cup of tea, sit down and enjoy this week’s random ramblings:

The Picture Hat: Would You Wear It?

Since many of you seem to like my beauty history posts, I thought why not write something about fashion history as well? So, I’m starting with Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire, the leader of the ton and fashion icon of Georgian England. In the 1780s Gainsborough painted a portrait (pictured above) of Georgiana wearing a wide-brimmed black hat, decorated with big ostrich feathers and a sash over the crown she had designed herself. When it was exhibited at the Royal Academy, many women rushed to their milliner to request “the picture hat” they had just seen. The popularity of the hat continued in the Victorian era as well, but was then called “The Gainsborough Hat”. What do you think of it? Would you wear it? Although I prefer smaller hats, I totally would! It’s simple and frames the face beautifully. It’s so sad that hats aren’t that fashionable anymore.

What I’m Reading Now

The Twelve Caesars by Suetonius. Suetonius was Emperor Hadrian’s private secretary. Thanks to his position, he had access to the imperial archives and so decided to use this information (as well as anecdotes from eyewitnesses) to write biographies of the twelve Emperors, from Julius Caesar to Domitian, who ruled Rome and its empire with absolute power. The version I have also features biographies of some of the most famous Roman grammarians, rhetoricians and poets, such as Terence and Pliny. However, I wouldn’t really call them biographies. They are more a collection of anecdotes, listed in no particular chronological order, about both the political (or literary) and private lives of these men. It’s kinda a weird read, but also an interesting one if you like Roman history. You’ll have to to get through this book, it’s really, really long! If you’re interested, it’s available for free at Project Gutenberg.

1. What’s your biggest fear?
Spiders. I can’t stand spiders. Even fake ones scare the hell out of me lol.

2. Do you wear cheek highlighters with your blush?
Depends on how shimmery my blush is. If it is very shimmering, no, that would be too much. Otherwise, I like to use a subtle highlighter such as Benefit High Beam.

3. What colour is your duvet cover?
It’s stripes of different shades of purple.

4. Chanel or Bourjois?
Chanel!

5. What do you think of 80′s fashion?

  1. 1. What’s your biggest fear? Bugs….probably because when I was little our building had a restaurant on the main floor and they had problems in the kitchen and bugs were always coming trough the pipelines, infiltrating everywhere…and stopping in the bathroom. Later on at the University the rooms were so bad, bugs were all over the place. :(
    2. Do you wear cheek highlighters with your blush? I started wearing a couple of days ago because I received a few highlighters for testing but before that I never did, I like to apply a pearl blush. :)
    3. What colour is your duvet cover? It’s pink and I’ve been using it many times to take photos of the products I post on my blog. :))
    4. Chanel or Bourjois? Chanel definitely! :)
    5. What do you think of 80′s fashions? I was busy with the 80′s music which I think it was fantastic. :)

  3. It seems like “shire” is used often to name places in England?
I would totally wear that hat and you’re right, I barely see people wear hats just for fashion or wear hats at all.
I applaud you for reading such factual books :O I don’t think I could make it through one.
    1. Moths and butterflies! I am horrified by them.
    2. Nope, just blush :D.
    3. Salmon pinky peach with white floral on it.
    4. My answer is the same as yours: Chanel! :D Of course
    5. tacky and what seems like randomly-matched outfits.

    • Janessa, yes, in the past the country was divided in shires, which roughly correspond to modern counties. :)

I think to read this type of books, you have to really, really love the subject, otrherwise you’ll give up soon. :)

  4. That had is amazing!

    • Icaria, the hat is gorgeous, isn’t it?

The big shoulder pads were one of the worst trends ever, imo.. really awful..

  5. 1. What’s your biggest fear?
Moths and butterflies. Those butterfly houses at the zoo just TERRIFY me :( Also a total dread of something truly awful happening to my children.
2.. Do you wear cheek highlighters with your blush?
No. Haven’t really managed the art of highlighters.
    3. What colour is your duvet cover?
Pink/purple/green/loads of other colours paisley patterns on an ivory background.
    4. Chanel or Bourjois?
Neither are a favourite, but Chanel over Bourjois any time.
    5. What do you think of 80′s fashion?
Oh dear. Cringe time. I remember falling victim to the craze for long ‘petticoat’ layers showing underneath a shorter skirt. Loads of incriminating photos prove that I was very much an 80′s fashion victim :(
