Does It Matter How You Sit While You’re Having Your Hair Cut?

There are many things that may worry us when we go to the salon to have our hair cut. Will the hairdresser listen to what I want? Will she try to sell me products I don’t need? Will the new haircut suit me? Yet, we never wonder how we should sit while we’re having our hair cut.

And why should we, I hear you ask? Of course we all know how to sit! That’s true, yet we all sit down a bit differently. There’s the girl who sits still, another who chats animatedly with the hairdresser, slightly changing position every now and then, another who prefers to read a magazine, keeping her legs crossed…

And the way you sit can affect your haircut. If you’re moving your head a lot or sitting badly, you’ll make it a lot harder for your hairdresser, especially if she isn’t very experienced yet, to cut your hair properly and, as a result, one side of your hair may be longer than the other. And you don’t want that, right? So, how can you prevent it?

By sitting as still as possible, keeping your legs on the footrest or, if you prefer, on the ground. Hairdressers use your body as a marker when they cut your hair and if you sit in any other position, such as with your legs crossed, then your shoulders, back and spine are out of alignment, making it harder for them to get it even.

For the same reason, you shouldn’t even read a a magazine. When you do, your body tends to lean forward just a little bit. And that little bit could make the difference between an even and uneven haircut. Instead, use this time to just relax or chat (without moving!) with your hairstylist. You can always read a magazine later when she’ll blowdry your hair.

This is great, Gio! I’ve never thought of how we sit matters when it comes to getting a haircut. Next time, I’ll sit up straight and proper :)

I sit with my hands on my lap and my feet rested on the foot-rester lol and I look forward the whole time. I’ll tilt my head down occasionally but I never have to turn my head sideways. My stylist will walk around if she wants to cut the side of my hair. :]

Lol, this makes me smile – I always, always have to be pulled backwards into the chair, as I initally find it hard to relax – not because it’s the hairdresser (I LOVE going to the hairdresser), but because I’m normally thinking of all the things that I should be doing instead of sitting having my hair cut. Sad, I know! Only takes a couple of minutes, then I can relax, and actually enjoy having to sit down and have a cup of coffee at leisure!

Viv, I know what you mean. It can be hard to relax at first, but once you do, having your hair cut can be very enjoyable.
