Product Review: Sleek Makeup Kohl Pencil in Gold and Sheer Marine

Name: Kohl Pencil in Gold and Sheer Marine
Brand: Sleek Makeup
Price: €3.76

From Sleek Makeup’s website:
An ultra creamy-matte formula pencil used to define the eyes. Can be applied on the lower and upper eyelid for long-lasting, stay-in-place colour which glides on effortlessly, to achieve a perfect look.

What I liked:
– glide on easily
– longlasting
– the price

What I didn’t like:
– not pigmented at all

If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you know that I love Sleek Makeup products. They are so pigmented, longlasting, affordable and have a soft texture that’s easy to work with. But even the best brands make the occasional dud and the Kohl Pencils in Gold and Sheer Marine are Sleek Makeup’s. I haven’t tried the other shades available so I can’t say whether the Kohl Pencils in general are bad or I’ve been unlucky to get the two that perform the worst, but Gold and Sheer Marine are two shades you should avoid. So, what’s the problem with them?

A complete lack of pigmentation. Sleek Makeup products are famous for how insanely pigmented they are so you can imagine how surprised I was when I lined my upper lashline with them and the shades just didn’t show up on my skin. At all. So I applied several layers but all I got was a very soft wash of color that was barely visible. Unless someone stands very close to you, they won’t be able to see it. And a primer doesn’t seem to improve the color payoff at all.

That’s really a bummer, especially because the shades are very pretty. Gold is, well, a gold shade and Sheer Marine is a pretty green aqua shade with shimmers. I know the description says matte formula but this shade definitely has shimmers in it (unlike the color, the shimmers can be seen on the lid). The texture isn’t very creamy but it’s not hard either and the pencils glide on smoothly. They don’t tug skin but I’m not sure that having to apply several coats is a good thing for the delicate eye area anyway.

The only thing that I really like about these pencils is their staying power. Once applied, they stay put all day. Although I’m not sure of how much use that is since you can barely see the colors anyway. Because of it, I cannot really recommend the Kohl Pencils in Gold and Sheer Marine. Sleek Makeup makes a lot of amazing products (here are my favourites), but these two pencils are just horrible.

Available at:

Sleek Makeup Kohl Pencils in Gold and Sheer Marine have absolutely no color payoff. Doesn’t matter how many layers you apply, you are never going to get an opaque line with them. The texture is ok, not too creamy but not too hard either, and longlasting.

What a shame – I’ve never yet met a Sleek product I didn’t like! Thanks for the review – I don’ t think I’ll be buying these. Actually, I have expensive tastes in kohl – I love the Guerlain loose kohls – definitely not cheap, but they just work so well :)

Viv, it’s really rare to come by a Sleek Makeup product that doesn’t work well. I love pretty much everything else they make too but these pencils are just horrible. The Guerlain kohl instead is very nice. :)

Oh dear, the colors on the packaging are gorgeous! But what the ……? Never expected such poor pigmentation from Sleek!

I love gold liner. And that pale mint shade…..I would love to wear that on my eyes come Summer…. But only if the actual products have exactly the same colors as in the outside/ on the pencil!

Vonvon, the colors on the packaging are beautiful, aren’t they? I was sure, when I bought them, that they were gonna translate on the lids well as Sleek products are usually so pigmented… but they turned out to be the sheerest pencils I’ve ever used. What a bummer!

Mylanqolia, it’s weird, isn’t it that these pencils, unlike everything else Sleek Makeup makes, are so sheer. I’m not sure if only these two are sheer or if the rest of the range is the same but, unless you can check them out in the store, I’d stay away from them.

Chemi, it is indeed. I was really surprised because usually Sleek Makeup products are very pigmented. :(
