QOTW: Do You Use Testers At Cosmetic Counters?

Do you use testers at cosmetic counters?

Beautiful with brains says: It depends. If they are in good condition, then yes but only on the back of my hand, never on my face. But I’ve seen testers so dirty and messy that I wouldn’t wanna touch them at all!

I am ashamed to say that I got pressured into applying lipstick testers on my actual lips TWICE (once at MAC, another at Chanel). Gah! I know it’s more accurate this way, but godfreakingdammit it gives me the creeps. So they say they sanitise, but I can’t help but imagine the people who used it last.

Krysty, that gives me the creeps too! There shouldn’t be any problems if they were properly sanitized, but I always worry they may sometimes forget. And then there are those that don’t sanitize at all..

Vonnie, I really envy you for working at Ulta and be able to play with all that makeup. And your clients are really lucky to have someone like you that sanitizes makeup. Sadly, not everyone does and here especially it is pretty rare.

I only trie Perfumes Or creams and sometimes i spray perfume in the air to smell it

    Lipgloss or lipstick eww…

Eight, oh I had forgotten about foundation. They are better tested on the jaw line so you can see if the color matches you properly. :)

i only test them on the back of my hands if they look clean, and quickly wipe it off with wet tissues!

i have seen the promoter girls and some ladies actually do their makeup using the testers, right in front of the counter. that puts me off totally.

Yup, on the backs of my hands. Really freaks me out when I see people testing things on their eyes, especially when people use mascara straight from the tube, not even with a disposable applicator o.O

My favorite is when stores have small samples though, because it’s best to see how cosmetics look in natural lighting (instead of those lights they have inside stores)

Makeup Morsels, I can’t believe there are people that would test products on their eyes, especially mascaras… just the thought creeps me out.. it’s so dangeorus, especially if the testers haven’t been properly sanitized.. ewww

Jeni, I used to do that too when I was younger and didn’t know better. I cringe about it now. Thank goodness nothing bad happened indeed!

Yes, but never on my face/lips/wherever.

And I’m sometimes queasy about that O_o , too, since people use them on their lips.

    • beautifulwithbrains says

Ana, me too. You wanna try their testers but you don’t know where they’ve been and that can be worrying… it’s always best to try anything on the back of the hand, just in case..

I remember Petrilude giving a tip about dipping the testers into alcohol and that it’s okay to use them afterward, but… even if I were into carrying medical alcohol with me, and even if I were into waiting for at least half a minute per item so it gets sanitized… wouldn’t the shop employees be a little weary of a girl with an alcohol filled cup in which 3 lipsticks are submerged?
They are pretty suspicious as is 😀 .

        • beautifulwithbrains says

Ana, that’s what I was thinking too. Here they get suspicious if you only want to browse… although if they said anything to me I’d get pretty mad as sanitizing testers is part of their job and they should always make sure they are in good condition..

Annabella, I have seen that too and it really creeps me out! I still use the testers, though, but only on the back of my hand.
