I love reading historical biographies and one of my favourites is Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire by Amanda Foreman (some of you may have seen the movie The Duchess, starring Kiera Knightley, which was inspired by this book). Georgiana led such a fascinating life full of contradictions and personal suffering. She was also a celebrity of her time with the papers reporting every little detail (as well as lies) about her. Georgiana was the undisputed queen of fashion and the ton, an important figure in the Whig party, a devoted mother and everyone she knew loved her.

But she was trapped in a loveless marriage, loved gambling and amassed huge debts, constantly asking her friends for loans she couldn’t repay and has the best friend from hell. Bess lived with the Devonshires and even had an affair with Georgiana’s husband (she went on to marry him after the Duchess’ death) but the Duchess was so emotionally dependant on her she would tolerate everything not be separated from her. The book is long, but flows easily and it is a really enjoyable and fascinating read and it shows just how active, even in politics, women in 18th century England could be. I highly recommend it.
