April is Earth Month! I think it is a nice way to remind people every year to be environmentally aware and to do their bit to take proper care of our planet. But it is something we should practice every day, not just when April comes around. Going green helps the environment, is easy and saves us some money too. Here are some earth-friendly beauty tips we should practice all year round:
1. Recycle your empty containers
Whenever you finish any skincare or makeup products, don’t throw their containers away. Recycle them. Jars and bottles can be washed and used to store whatever you need to store. For example, I like to make my own skincare products sometimes and these containers are very handy to store them in. But you can put whatever else you want in them. If, for whatever reason, the container can’t be reused, then dump them in recycle containers or bring them to any recycle facilities. Plastic can take literally millions of years to decompose so if you want to dispose of it, do it properly so that it won’t pollute the environment. In addition, some brands also have recycling program. We have all heard of Back2MAC, a programme that allows you to swap 6 empty containers for a lipstick or gloss. Kiehl’s and Origins have similar programs too so take advantage of them: you’re taking care of the environment and being rewarded for it.
2. Limit water usage
We all like to take a nice, long, relaxing bath every now and again and there’s nothing wrong with it, but don’t do it too often. Limit baths to special occasions or when you’ve had a very tiring day and want to pamper yourself a little, but otherwise, just take a shower. Water is precious and shouldn’t be wasted. And it’s not just the environment that will thank you. Your skin and wallet will too. Long showers and bath, especially if the water is very hot, can dry out your skin. And the less water you use, the smaller your water bill will be.
3. Bring reusable bags with you when you go shopping
As mentioned above, plastic (and thus plastic bags), take millions of years to decompose and so we should limit its use whenever possible. A great way to do it is by bringing a canvas bag with you when you go shopping. Not only are they environment-friendly, but they are also very cute and stylish. If you tend to forget to bring a canvas bag with you, simply keep it in the car. That way, you’ll never be without it.
4. Buy refills, avoid disposables
When you shop, opt for products with refills available. Soaps and body washes are often available in refills and even more and more cosmetics products are offering refillable eyeshadows, blushes etc.. That way, you can purchase the product you want but without the packaging. This lowers the price and creates less waste. In addition, avoid disposable products whenever possible. Don’t throw away a razor after every use, but keep using it until the blade turns dull. Opt for a good facial cleanser instead than makeup remover wipes and unless you are a makeup artist or someone who likes to share products in their stash with their friends, don’t waste money on disposable wands or disposable brushes.
5. Buy fair trade products
I admit this is the one tip that I don’t follow too often. There are just so many great and tempting products out there that it is easy to stray. Fair trade means that the people in poor countries who make cosmetics are paid what they deserve for the work they do and products they make instead than being exploited. When you buy these products, you are helping to improve the lives of regular people, who in turn have the money to properly care for their land. Fair trade also encourages environmentally sustainable production methods. These products also cost a bit more but it’s for a good cause: you’re helping people in need and the environment. And besides, if you follow the tips above, you will have saved enough money to indulge in fair trade products, at least once in a while.
