in ingredients

What it is
Magnesium Laureth Sulfate is the salt of Sodium Laureth Sulfate.

What it does
Magnesium Laureth Sulfate is a surfactant used in shampoos and other products to remove dirt, product build-up and other impurities, thus cleaning hair and skin. Gentle and less irritating than most surfactants, it is considered to be a good choice for people with sensitive skin.

Side effects
Magnesium Laureth Sulfate, although very mild, could still cause slight irritation in some people.

I’ve never seen a product with magnesium laureth sulfate before, only something with aluminium laureth sulfate. It made my scalp itch so I don’t use shampoos with sulfate anymore.

Dao, I’ve seen a couple of products with it, but I don’t think it’s widely used. Shame as it is gentler than other sulfates. I’m sorry they make your skin itch, that’s too bad.

Thanks for the info. I always thought that only SLS will cause irritation to skin.

Lavender, all ingredients that can clean skin have the potential to cause irritations as they could strip too much natural oil (which is what keeps skin naturally moisturized) if used too much, in too high concentrations or if your skin is particularly sensitive. SLS is the most irritating one. As for the others, most people (unless they have very sensitive skin) will be able to use them without experiencing any irritations. :)

I love these posts! I realized that I don’t pay enough attention to the ingredients in my cosmetics and skincare, so these are so helpful.

Makeup Morsels, I’m glad you enjoy these posts and find them helpful. Those ingredient lists can be very hard to decypher and understand but I think it’s important to learn what ingredients do to find the products that work best for us and I hope these posts can help. :)

Thanks for this information, this was really helpful! always wondered what it was..
some ingredients have such a hard name when it’s a really simple ingredient, such as vitamins…

Celeste, I’m glad you found it helpful. And I agree, some names are so long and complicated. They can make an ingredient seem scary when it’s something very simple.

Thanks so much for this. Most sulfates are very irritating to my scalp because they are so harsh. My new shampoo has this sulfate in it and I was hoping it wasn’t as harsh as ALES, SLES and SLS.

DeeDee, you’re welcome. I’m glad you found a sulfate that doesn’t irritate your scalp and works well. :)
