Know Your Ingredients: Calcium Ascorbate

in ingredients

What it is
Calcium Ascorbate is a stable form of Vitamin C.

What it does
Calcium Ascorbate is an antioxidant that fights free radical formation and is necessary for collagen production. It also helps heal inflammation.
In addition, it is used in cosmetic products to adjust their ph and to help prevent them from spoiling when they come in contact with the oxygen in the air.

Side effects
Calcium Ascorbate is generally considered to be safe. However, products containing forms of Vitamin C can be expensive so make sure they contain a high enough concentration of this ingredient (don’t buy products that list it at the very end!) before purchasing. If the concentrations are too small, it just won’t do much for your skin at all.

There are many forms of vitamin C and every time I use it, I have to remind myself to use sunscreen.

Dao, yep, there are lots of forms of Vitamin C but this one seems to be better than others as it is stable. And I agree that sunscreen is a must when one uses products with Vitamin C, thanks for the reminder. :)

Alejandra, yes. That’s another form of Vitamin C and it has antioxidant properties as well.

Thanks Gia, im still looking for a good and affordable vitamin C product. Speaking about calcium ascorbate, I found a serum from Derma E, its Ester C serum with E Skin Recovery Complex, 60 ml for about 12 dollars so seems to be the most affordable Ill ever found.
Im wondering its vit C concentration, the company doesnt reveal it, what do you think? I leave you the ingredients list.

Water (Purified), Glycerin, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Extract (Organic), Calcium Ascorbate (Ester C), Allantoin (Comfrey Root), Cetearyl Alcohol, Borage (Borago Officinalis) Seed Oil, Retinyl Acetate (Vitamin A), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E) (Vitamin E), Borage (Borago Officinalis) Seed Oil, Xanthan Gum, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexl Glycerin, Fragrance with Essential Oils

Alejandra, I think this is a great serum full of antioxidants that will benefit skin and help prevent and fight premature aging. Vitamin C is the fourth ingredient so it should be present in an amount high enough to work well and at that price, this serum’s a steal!
