Product Review: Essence Quattro Eyeshadow in Party Animal

Name: Quattro Eyeshadow in Party Animal
Brand: Essence
Size: 0.1oz/5g
Price: €3,49

From Essence’s website:
The seductive nuances make it really hard to choose since every one of the perfectly aligned palettes of quattro eyeshadows offer a multitude of color combinations. So you can set exciting accents in the trend colors of the spring season.

What I liked:
– nice color combination
– soft texture
– blend easily
– if you’re afraid of colors, these are very soft and wearable
– the price

What I didn’t like:
– not very pigmented
– crease and don’t last too long even with a primer

I love eyeshadow palettes so when Essence opened up a counter here I had to pick up one of them to try. Being a fan of colorful eyeshadows, I chose the Quattro eyeshadow in Party Animal, which features a bright yellow, a light green, a baby blue and lilac/purple shades. All of them have a mostly matte, only slightly shimmering finish and are very wearable, even for those that are scared of colorful shades.

They are all quite sheer and you need to apply them wet or over a primer to improve the color payoff. And even then, these aren’t vibrant or bold, but soft pastel shades that go very well with one another and are very easy to pull off. Personally, I was a bit disappointed about this as the colors looked more promising in the compact, but I think those that want only a wash of color on their lids may like them.

The texture is soft to the touch and only slightly powdery so it doesn’t really bother me. Also, the shadows, which are packaged in a simple clear square compact, are easy to blend. And you can’t really beat the price. I mean, for €3,49 you can forgive the shades for not being too pigmented or for coming in a cheap case.

But what I can’t forgive is the poor staying power. The shadows crease and fade on my slightly-oily lids after about 3 or 4 hours or wear. Most eyeshadows don’t last too long on me, but an eyeshadow primer always took care of that, making sure than once the shadow’s applied in the morning, it stays put till it’s time to take it off before going to bed. But with these eyeshadows even eyeshadow primers fail.

It may take them one or two more hours of wear but they’ll still fade and you’ll have to reapply them. And when I say reapply, I don’t mean retouching here and there, I mean doing the entire look from scratch! If you have dry lids, maybe they’ll perform differently on you, but since they don’t work too well on me I only use them when I know I’ll be out for just a few hours so by the time they start to fade I’m already at home again.

Summary
Overall, I think that with Essence Quattro Eyeshadow in Party Animal you get what you pay for. The shades work well with each other and have a soft texture that blends easily. They are all quite sheer and safe to wear even for those that are scared of colorful makeup, but they have very poor staying power. Even with a primer, they only last a few hours.

I’ve got some Quatro eyeshadows like this too….I’m hopping they will not crease :(( because I just picked up some great colors. :(

Tavia, I hope you will have a better experience than me and that they won’t crease on you. I really liked the colors in this palette when I first saw them, but when put to the test I found them pretty disappointed. They’re average drugstore shadows which I’m not too keen on. :(

Dao, I agree. I like the colors, but it’s too bad they fade and crease after a few hours. :(

Trisha, I was hoping they were more pigmented and brighter too. I think they are still pretty, but it’s the poor staying power that disappointed me the most. :(

Thanks for this good review! That’s exactly the reason why I skipped this qauttro. Good news: The nude quattro is better pigmented but I’d recommend to choose the single eyeshadows. They have a convincing colour payoff in contrast to the palettes of Essence (standard and LE).

Mylanqolia, I wish I had swatched it in stores, but we only have a small Essence counter here and the testers are always so messy! But you did the right thing skipping this. I think it may be good for neutral lovers that are scared of colorful eyeshadows and only want a sheer wash of color, but still the pigmentation is disappointing. It’s good to hear the neutral palette has better color payoff and I agree with you. The single shadows are much better, I think I’ll stick with them only from now on.
