What beauty rules do you follow?
Beautiful With Brains says: I’m very diligent at following skincare rules like always clean your face before going to bed and wear sunscreen daily. But makeup-wise I don’t follow any. I don’t think that you can’t use the same eyeshadow color as your eyes, or that you can’t pair bold eyes with bold lips or that eyeshadow should always be blended perfectly (sometimes leaving a more defined line adds some edginess to your look if that’s what you’re after).
At the end of the day, it depends on the way the makeup’s applied. If you’re good, then breaking these rules will result in beautiful looks. Makeup is an art and a way to express your personality so stop worrying about rules and free your inner artist. And remember, practice (not following some silly rules) makes perfect.

I’m not very good at following any type of beauty rules, even with skin care.
I had a reader on Makeup Files comment on one of my Face of the Days saying I shouldn’t have worn pink eye shadow because I was wearing a pink top. To them, it’s a sin to match makeup to what you wear. Yeah, that’s not a rule I’m going to be following anytime soon. I don’t match every time, but sometimes it just looks nice.

Jojoba, I agree. I think it’s important to follow some rules to keep our skin in good condition, but makeup should be fun and allow you to experiment.
Trisha, not following the rules is a good thing, at least makeup-wise, imo.
I can’t believe someone said that to you. I don’t understand some people. It’s like they read some tip from a magazine or blog or whatever and think they need to follow it precisely all the time to look good. That’s boring and silly. They’d be surprised of what looks good if they dared to experiment. I like to match my makeup to my clothes too. I don’t do it all the time, but very often. It’s fun and looks good.
