Name: Lip Magnet Primer
Brand: Pop Beauty
Size: 3.5g
Price: £8.00

From Pop Beauty’s website:
Lip Magnet Primer creates a plumped up, smooth canvas to “hang onto” any lip product and stay true to colour. Stop signs of aging by filling in fine lines and preventing colour feathering.

What I liked:
– plumps lips
– creates a smooth surface
– color is more true
– makes lip products last longer without feathering
– the packaging
– the price

What I didn’t like:
– irritates lips
– products last longer, but only a little bit longer
– although it claims to be fragrance free, a fragrance was added to it

I was looking for a lip primer that wasn’t too expensive when I came across Pop Beauty Lip Magnet Primer on asos.com. The little pink tube with silver flowers on it was simply too cute to resist! My fingers acted faster than my brain and soon the primer was on its way to me.

But once I had it in my hand and started playing with it, my excitement was tinged with disappointment. Maybe my expectations were just too high, but while the primer does what it is supposed to do, it didn’t really wow me.

It has a light, smooth consistency and is pale beige in color to create a natural canvas for your lip products to adhere to. I find that the primer does a good job at keeping the colors in place and avoid feathering, but it doesn’t improve the staying power of lipsticks or glosses that much.

I tested a few lip products both with and without the primer and they last longer when I use Pop Lip Magnet, but only a little bit longer. So little, that I don’t really feel the need to use the primer at all. Also, this doesn’t stop lip products to disappear if you eat or drink.

I didn’t expect the primer to make my lipstick last through dinner, but I was hoping I would still have a hint of color left after I had a small snack. Instead, everything disappeared, just like when I wear my lippie without a base.

The pale beige shade instead neutralizes my natural lip color well and creates a neutral base so that lipglosses and lipsticks stay true to color. In addition, the primer felt quite moisturizing on my lips. Lipsticks can feel drying so I always wear lip balm underneath, but I can skip it if I use this primer as it does the trick as well.

At the center of the primer there is a small circular white core: that’s the lip plumper and the main reason why I don’t like this product very much. When I apply it, it gives me a burning and stinging feeling, which doesn’t hurt, but isn’t pleasant at all.

That’s because the primer contains Methyl Nicotinate, which plumps lips by producing inflammation. I did notice that my lips were plumper after putting this on but, if to get that effect, I need to irritate my lips, than no thank you! I should’ve paid more attention to the ingredient list, but that’s what you get for shopping online I guess.

Another thing I didn’t like is that, although the box the primer comes with clearly states it is fragrance free, fragrance IS listed in the ingredient list! And in fact, this has a scent, but it is so faint you can barely smell it, so unless you read the label you can actually be tricked to believe no fragrance was added to the primer.

Summary
Overall, I think Pop Beauty Lip Magnet Primer is just average. It creates a smooth neutral canvas that makes color stay true, not feather and last just a little bit longer. Plus, the packaging is so pretty! It also plumps lips but it does so by irritating them, making lips burn and sting.

Rating: 3/5

I don’t use lip primer but once in a while, I apply liquid concealer to my lips to mute the color. It works quite well, I must say.

Dao, this is my first lip primer. After trying eye and face primers and see what a difference they make, I thought I’d explore other types of primers as well, but this one was a disappointment. I should have saved the money and tried the concealer trick. I’m glad it works well for you :)

Vanessa H, I hate that burning sensation lip plumpers give you. I don’t mind having plumper lips but what’s the point if that’s because they are irritated? Irritation is never good!

I’m such a sucker for packaging too! It’s hard to resists when a product looks so pretty!
