Name: Masterpiece Max
Brand: Max Factor
Size: 7.2ml
Price: €13,49

From Max Factor’s website:
Masterpiece Max Mascara is the next generation of mascara. It delivers bold, thick lashes with up to 400% volume but defines and smoothes at the same time for a surprisingly, sleek effect.

What I liked:
– adds length
– separates lashes
– doesn’t smudge
– curls lashes
– longlasting
– the packaging
– the wand

What I didn’t like:
– doesn’t add much volume
– doesn’t hold a curl for long
– minor flakes
– the price

I’ve tried several mascaras last year and they always disappointed me. It’s not that they weren’t good, it’s just that the look they provided was too natural for my taste. What I want from a mascara is thickness and volume and Max Factor Masterpiece Max promises just that.

And since Max Factor mascaras have never let me down in the past, I decided to give this one a go too. But does this deliver what it promises?

Well, not really. I obviously didn’t expect my lashes to have up to 400% more volume (how can anyone measure that anyway?), but I was hoping it would add some drama to my lashes. Instead, despite being marketing as a volumizing mascaras, this delivers very little volume to lashes. And adding one or two more coats doesn’t make much of a difference in terms of volume either :(

Instead, what the mascara does is adding length without any clumps while the wand is very good at separating lashes. The result? Enhanced and defined lashes with just a hint of volume for a natural and nice look.

In addition, the mascara also adds curl to some extent, but you should still use an eyelash curler prior to it for better results. In any case, the curl only lasts for a few hours, unlike the mascara that stays put all day, until you remove it at night (which is easy to do ;) ).

The mascara didn’t smudge on me, but I noticed some flakes by the end of the day. However, these were so minor that they didn’t really bother me. Also, the mascara was gentle and didn’t irritate my eyes.

As for the wand, it’s not too long, nor too thick. It’s the perfect size and flexible, which makes for precise application. Instead of bristles, it has small plastic spikes that reach each and every lash. Even those little stubborn ones that are hard to get are lengthened and separated.

Summary
Overall, Max Factor Masterpiece Max is a nice everyday mascara. It doesn’t give much volume as claimed, but it lengthens and defines lashes without clumping nor smudging. It lasts all day and is easy to remove, but I think it is too expensive for what it does.

Rating: 3.5/5

Nikki, you’re welcome and thanks. Max Factor is one of my fave drugstore brands, it’s a shame it’s so underrated. You should try something from them, their lipsticks and cream blush are pretty good.

Jenn, aww thank you, you’re very kind.

I think it’s a nice mascara, I just expected a bit more drama but I kinda like the results. Mmmm, maybe the packaging is different in Asia?

Wow…I remember this one, I used to wear it a few year back. What I didn’t like about Max Factor mascaras was that they were fast consuming, I mean every 3 weeks I had to buy a new one. I remember I was crazy about Memories of a Geisha and I bought 3 of them, before I finally decided to gave into Lancome :)

Tavia, that’s weird, they last a bit longer for me. But if you needed to buy them so often it’s no wonder you switched! Lancome makes some really nice mascaras, very lenghtening.

I think this looks nice on your lashes. Have you tried the two-mascara method? Use a lengthening mascara first wait for it to dry slightly then use a volumizing mascara on top of that. I’ve tried it a few times and I like the fullness and length it gives. Maybe I should do a post on that next time. Its a shame that MAX Factor is going to disappear from the US completely this year. All I see are their blushes left nowadays, lol.

thanks for reviewing this. i guess for the price, any normal mascara is sufficient to do the job.

Dee, you should write a post on that! It’d be very interesting. Yes, I do that sometimes and while I like the results (my lashes look so full and long!), having to use two mascara is a bit annoying for me. I still hope I can find the one that does it all.

Oh, what a shame! I haven’t tried their powder blushes yet (I’ve just bought one but have still to use it), but I love their cream blushes. They are more long-lasting than most cream blushes and not sticky.

prettybeautiful, you’re welcome and I agree. Pretty much any mascara can do that so I don’t think I’ll repurchase.

Wow! Your natural lashes are amazingly full and long. *envy* I guess, every mascara works on them. Can I perhaps borrow them for a day?;-) Btw, I’ve received you email. Don’t worry, all is fine. Otherwise, I wouldn’t talk to you anylonger. ;-) XOX

Mylanqolia, thanks. I don’t really like my eyelashes, so you’re free to borrow them whenever you want ;)

I’m so sorry about the email hun. It was stupid gmail fault (I’ve been checking my spam folder every day since then, you never know) but I feel really bad for it anyway. Thanks for your understanding, I would never ever ignore you (or anyone else). *hugs*
