Know Your Ingredients: Ethyl Acetate

in ingredients

ethyl acetate

What it is
Ethyl Acetate is a colorless liquid that has a sweet and fruity smell.

What it does
Ethyl Acetate is a solvent. It is often used in nail polish removers because it can dissolve nitrocellulose, which is one of the main ingredients in nail polishes as it has the ability to form a film that holds all the other substances together.
Due to its ability to evaporate quickly, it’s very used in fragrances to leave the scent on the skin without any alcoholic residue.

Side effects
Although Ethyl Acetate can be toxic and harm the respiratory system in high doses, it is not dangerous in skincare products. When applied to the skin it has no major side effects, but it could cause irritations in some people.
