What it is
Polyvinylpyrrolidone, also called PVP or PVP copolymer or povidone, is a polymer that is water soluble. When dry, it is a light yellow powder.
What it does
Polyvinylpyrrolidone forms a film on hair, skin and nails. It is widely used in hair products because this film holds hair in place by preventing it from absorbing moisture. In skincare products, this barrier has water-binding properties and gives skin a firmer appearance.
In addition, it helps keep emulsions from separating into their liquid and oil components.
Side effects
Polyvinylpyrrolidone can be a skin sensitizer.
