Product Review: L’Oreal Telescopic Explosion Mascara

loreal telescopic explosion mascara 01

Name: Telescopic Explosion
Brand: L’Oreal
Size: 8ml
Price: €16,99

From L’Oreal’s website:
The globe shaped brush is:
– Precise: to get right into the corners capturing even the shortest lashes.
– Spherical: to use from any angle for longer-looking lashes.
– Precise: to seek out every lash for a fanned out effect.
The Result: A spectacular fanned-out effect, for voluminous and beautifully lengthened looking lashes.

What I liked:
– lengthens
– separates lashes
– the wand
– the packaging

What I didn’t like:
– doesn’t add much volume
– it clumps
– smudges
– the price

I admit I only got this mascara because of the brush. The wand is a ball with little spikes on it, which is very similar to that of Givenchy’s Phenomen’Eyes mascara, and I thought it would be a cheap way to try it. Boy, was I wrong. This baby cost me €16,99! That’s about $24! For a drugstore mascara! That’s crazy! Seriously, if L’Oreal wants to increase the prices then it should increase the quality of the products as well, not charging so much for a gimmicky brush!

I know it’s my fault and when I realised the price wasn’t on display I should have asked but I honestly didn’t think a drugstore mascara would cost that much! I only found out when I was paying for it and although I was really tempted to just go away without the mascara, I couldn’t do it. I’m just too nice for my own good sometimes. *sighs* But there is no way I would ever repurchase it. It’s just not worth it and the only thing that’s explosive about it is the huge mess it makes!

I was a bit worried the wand would be difficult to use, but it’s not. The ball is small and reaches all the lashes, even the tiniest ones. But where this mascara fails is the formula. It’s intensely black, wet and very runny. As a result, the wand picks up too much product causing it to clump and glue all the lashes together, leaving me with one huge lash. No kidding.

However, the mascara works ok if, before applying it, you wipe the wand off with a tissue. That will reduce clumping to a minimal, add lots of length and even separate lashes. But it doesn’t do much for volume. The result is quite natural which makes it more suitable for daytime. I’ve used the mascara quite a lot lately so you can check out my EOTDS (here and here for example) to see it in action.

Although the mascara lasted for most of the day, the curl didn’t, even if I use an eyelash curler. It also smudges and, if you cry or just shed a tear o two, you’re left with panda eyes. But at least the red packaging is pretty and very eye-catching.

Summary
Overall, L’Oreal Telescopic Explosion is an average mascara. It lengthens lashes and gives them a natural look but doesn’t add volume. The wand picks up too much product and if you don’t wipe it off, it will clump a lot. And it smudges too.

It doesn’t cost that much here, at all. It’s under £10, I can’t believe they charged you so much.

It is clumpy, and hard to use and can be messy, but with practice you can get good control. Because of its tendency to stick the lashes together, I first use a primer on my lashes, and then I use a mascara which fans them out – like any big brush mascara, although I’m using Bourjois Liner Effect.

Immediately after I go over with this, it curls them a little and adds a lot more volume and definition, and if I angle the brush right I can use it to separate out any mess, but I do have to pinch clumps off the ends.

Don’t throw it away, try it over the top of another mascara which leaves your lashes fanned out but thin, and you might like it more.

Nikki: you’re welcome. I haven’t tried the one with the silver packaging, but I’m not too keen on this one. The formula isn’t that good and clumps a lot!

Dao: unfortunately I can’t. Here you can usually only return cosmetics if they haven’t been opened and you have a receipt. And even then, it depends on the shop policy, some don’t accept returns at all. I think using the wand with another mascara is a good idea. I love the wand, it reaches all the lashes and separates them well, it’s the formula that is really bad!

Eru: yes, they do but I was hoping a cheaper option would be just as good. But for what I paid for it, I might just as well have bought the Givenchy mascara, it surely would have been money better spent.
And you’re very welcome hun, I’m always glad to help :)

Tavia: you’re welcome and I hope your friend will find the review useful. I think she should try something else, this mascara clumps too much and is just an hassle to apply. And thanks, I did ;)

Anastasia: I know, I couldn’t believe it either. Apparently it doesn’t cost much all over the world, except here. Typical! And there is no way I’m throwing it away after what I paid for it, I’m going use it all up, even if I don’t like it that much!
I usually just wipe any excess off the wand, which prevents the mascara from clumping and making a mess, but that provides a very natural look. I wouldn’t really mind it if the mascara didn’t cost that much, but for what I paid I expected better.
I’ll try using it on top of another mascara, thanks, hopefully that’ll provide more volume which is the main thing I look for in a mascara. But I just hate having to find a way to make it work. Mascaras shouldn’t be this messy and difficult to use.

Anastacia, the wand looks weird and cool, but I love it. It reaches all the lashes, even those tiny, hard-to-reach ones. ;)

I photographed a very quick look I did the other day using this to show you the kind of effect I get with it using my combination. Somewhere I have a whole series of photos I took because I was going to post about mixing mascaras, but I didn’t get around to it what with one thing or another.

I’ll dig it off my camera and e-mail it to you, since it’s not post-ready without some editing.

Awww, thank you Ana, that was so nice of you! I really appreciate it. :) And I can’t wait to read your posts about mixing mascaras, but take your time, I know you’re busy. *off to read your email*
