Name: Color Riche Shine Gelee
Brand: L’Oreal

From L’Oreal’s website:
The first lipstick containing Royal Jelly. It hydrates like a balm. It shines like a gloss.

What I liked:

- hydrates lips and leaves them soft
- nice scent
- tastes delicious

What I didn’t like:
- not very pigmented
- not longlasting
- the packaging

It’s been a while since a product from L’Oreal has caught my eye, esp since lately the prices have been increasing way too much for a drugstore brand. But when L’Oreal Color Riche Shine Gelee was released a few months ago, it seemed like every magazine came with a free sample of it, so I had a chance to try it.

The lipstick comes in a yellow tube which is bulky and not really appealing. It is available in 12 shades. I managed to get quite a few samples, all of the same shade: pretty peach. It is a sheer shade of pink with some very subtle peach undertones and lots of shimmers. It provides just a hint of color and lots of shine.

It has a nice fruity scent and tastes delicious! Like most lip products, it doesn’t last long and needs to be reapplied frequently throughout the day. The texture is hydrating, which makes application very easy and leaves lips feeling very soft and not dry at all.

L’Oreal claims this is because of Royal Jelly, a substance secreted by worker bees. However most of the claims made about royal jelly, including the fact it can help prevent wrinkles, aren’t backed up by any substantial proof. Royal Jelly can, instead, cause allergic reactions. In any case, the ingredient is at the bottom of the ingredient list, so it doesn’t really do much, if anything in this product.

Instead, it is the synthetic chemicals that do all the work. The first three ingredients are all emollients. Diisostearyl Malate is a skin conditioning agent mostly used in lip products. Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, a synthetic oil, is a great moisturizer and prevents water loss too.

Phenyl Trimethicone is a silicone that functions as a skin conditioning agent. It has a drier finish than dimethicone, which is also present in the product. Both ingredients form a barrier on the skin’s surface that slows down water loss.

Summary:
Overall, I like the lipstick. It’s not very pigmented but it gives a nice hint of color and is very shiny. It doesn’t dry lips, but hydrates and leaves them feeling soft. However, it doesn’t last long and the packaging is a real turn off for me.

Rating:. 3.5/5

€13 though? Couldn’t you buy a MAC lipstick for that?

I love MAC lipsticks because their pigmentation is great, and they go on so smooth, they cover any imperfections in my lips, whereas thinner lipsticks make them more obvious.

Anastasia: The price is pretty steep for a drugstore lipstick, that’s one of the reasons why I didn’t rate it higher. It is a good lipstick and a lot more moisturizing than most drugstore lippies. I managed to get quite a few samples of this, but if I had to pay, I’d rather buy a MAC lipstick too, the pigmentation and quality is definitely superior.

Anastacia: thank you! :)

I tried this lippie too (sample in magazine, hehe~) and it reminded me so much to the Glam Shine Cream range! Maybe it was the scent or something. Didn’t impress me either, the packaging looks so cheap :S .

Eru: I agree, it’s an ok lipstick but nothing special. And I hate the packaging, it’s so tacky!

Mona, I’m glad you like it. I think it is a nice lipstick, but for the price, there are better ones out there :)
