If you don’t want to wear glasses, contact lenses are the perfect solution. But wearing makeup with contacts can be tricky and, if you’re not careful, lead to infections. Here are a few tips to ensure a safe application:
EYES
- Choose creams eyeshadows instead of powder ones. Powder can fall on the lens and cause an eye irritation.
- Avoid lash-extending mascaras that contain nylon fibers (look for chemicals that contain the world nylon like Nylon-6). These fibers can get loose and stuck on your contacts, causing eye infections.
- Use an hypoallergenic mascara. Apply it carefully and not too close to the base of the lashes. Wait for the first coat to dry before applying again.
- Avoid liquid eyeliner. Choose a waterproof and soft pencil one instead. Do not use eyeliner on the insides of your lids. This can smear the lenses and cause irritations.
FACE
- Use a light moisturizer as a heavy one could melt, smearing the lenses.
- Use pressed instead of loose powder as some of it could fall into your eyes. Apply it carefully, removing any excess around the eyes.
HAIR
- Use hairspray before inserting contact lenses. If you need to use it afterwards, keep your eyes closed shut when spraying. Back away from the cloud of spray fast and with your eyes still closed.
GENERAL TIPS
- Always insert contact lenses BEFORE applying makeup. That way you won’t ruin the makeup to apply the lenses and, more importantly, you can see what you are doing.
- Also, make sure you don’t apply hand creams on your hands before putting your lenses in your eyes or any residues from the lotion may stick to the lense and end up in your eye causing an irritation.
- Always remove the lenses before your makeup at night.
- Remove eye makeup with a water-based eye remover. Oil-based one can leave some residue for 24 hours on the eye area, which may cloud the lenses.
- Nail polishes, nail polishes removers and fragrances can damage contact lenses so keep these products away from them.
- Make sure your hands are clean before inserting and removing contact lenses.
- Keep all your makeup tools clean too.

Nic nic: I agree, she looks great with the lenses. If your contacts are hard there’s nothing wrong with applying them after your makeup
Anastacia: that’s not me, I got the pix from flickr, but you’re right, they look very pretty
I can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t want to wear glasses. Personally, I ADORE glasses. Back when I had to wear them as a kid, they were all ugly and horrible, and now we have all these sexy brightly-coloured rectangular amazing looking ones. I actually want a pair of prescription-free glasses just to wear them. (I do have a prescription, but it’s so weak I don’t bother)
Why wouldn’t you want a kickass accessory you can wear on your face? Maybe I just love it because I love the indie look, so I really want a pair.
I love glasses on guys, too. My boyfriend wears glasses/usually contacts, and I always bug him to wear the glasses around me. Mmm.

Anastasia: maybe they don’t think they look good with glasses or don’t want other people to know they can’t see as well as them? I wear glasses at home, when I’m reading or when I use my computer but my optician says I don’t have to wear them all the time so I usually don’t bother wearing them when I go out.
My boyfriend has to always wear glasses but when he goes out he puts on contacts and then complains his eyes hurt because he’s been weaing them for too long!
But there are so many types these days, that some of them really make some amazing accessories and can complement a look well.
Connie: Thanks! That should be ok if your contacts are hard
But I’m so clumsy that I would make a mess of and smear all the lenses if I put them on afterwards lol
