My mum has never been into makeup. I remember when I was little, she would apply pink or red polish on her nails, but that was it. Lately, however, she has started to wear some makeup and asked me to help her choose a foundation that provides great coverage without breaking the bank.
Max Factor Creme Puff Compact was the first thing I suggested. I had bought a compact years before and had fallen in love with it. Unfortunately even the lightest shade was too dark for me, so I had to stop using it. My mum, however, didn’t feel comfortable with using a powder foundation, she wanted a liquid one.
After trying a few L’Oreal liquid foundations that didn’t work for her and Pupa Hydra Luminys Foundation, which she loved but cost more than she was willing to spend, I finally managed to convince her to try Max Factor Creme Puff Compact. And guess what? She’s fallen in love with it too and now refuses to use anything else!
Max Factor Creme Puff is available in 7 shades. My mum uses #13, Nouveau Beige, which I think is the lightest shade available. It can be used as a foundation or worn on top of it as powder.
The powder provides medium coverage: it evens out the skintone nicely and covers small imperfections. It is very smooth and applies easily. The finish is matte, but because it contains very tiny light reflectors, it doesn’t look dull but just slightly glowy.
It is very long-lasting although you would need to reapply it in the evening. The scent is soft, powdery and old. I don’t mind it and neither does my mum, but some people could be put off by it.
The packaging is very simple: a circular dark blue case. It comes with a sponge but no mirror. This doesn’t bother me as most foundations come with small mirrors that are useless anyway. Besides, the staying powder is good so you don’t need to do touch-ups frequently.
One of the main ingredients of this foundation is Talc. It imparts skin adhesion to cosmetics and is also used to help control shine and absorb oil. Although it can be drying and clog pores for certain skin types, neither me nor my mum experienced any dryness or breakouts when using this product.
It also contains Calcium Carbonate, which is used as an absorbent and opacifying agent in cosmetics and Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil), which is considered to be a very effective moisturizer and makes skin very soft.
Summary:
If you’re looking for a cheap powder foundation, you should give Max Factor Creme Puff a try. It provides great coverage with a matte finish that last for hours. It can also be used as a powder on top of your foundation.

The only problem with this (even though I do like it as a makeup) and other makeups is that the colour range doesn’t seem to have an order from lightest to darkest. If you need the next lighter shade you have to guess which one’s name might be it, or which one looks a little lighter in the pack. But they often look different when applied. If they came in numbers from palest to darkest it would be much easier to purchase. Also some are way too pink.
ps: I just went to two shops that sell Max Factor and they don’t have Creme Puff compressed powder
Is the product being phased out?
Pamela, I agree that the color range and its numbers aren’t that great. There aren’t too many shades and the way they are numbered is very confusing. This is definitely a product you have to try in person at the counter to see if you can find a shade that matches you perfectly.
I don’t know where you live but here in Italy, it is stil available. I heard Max Factor is leaving the US though so I guess there, the products that available to buy are just leftover stock.
