Crow’s feet are those fine lines that appear around the eyes starting from the corners. They’re usually the first wrinkles to appear and are more noticeable when you contract the muscles on your face (squinting or smiling for example). They can be caused by several factors:
Sun exposure
Sun exposure is one of the main causes of crow’s feet. UV rays damages elastin fibers and collagen production, which keep skin elastic. This causes skin to become loose, saggy and wrinkled.
Squinting
Collagen production decreases with age. That’s why over the years contracting the muscles around the eyes causes permanent wrinkles to form.
Smoking
Smoking damages collagen production and elastin fibers as well as decreasing blood flow so that your organs can’t get the proper amount of oxygen they need. In addition, squinting your eyes when smoking contributes to form crow’s feet.
Menopause
Crow feet can also occur after menopause because of hormonal changes. In fact, menopause decreases estrogen, which maintain skin’s collagen and hydration, thus helping prevent wrinkles.
Now that you know what causes crow’s feet, you can prevent them by always wearing sunscreen, quit (or don’t start) smoking and using a good moisturizer around the eye area.
