What it is
Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A Palmitate) is a form of Vitamin A. It is produced from Retinol (Vitamin A) and Palmitic Acid (a fatty acid). It is easily absorbed by the skin. Once absorbed, it turns first into retinol and then into retinoic acid.
What it does
Retinyl Palmitate is a skin and hair conditioning agent. It reduces flaking and restores suppleness, thus improving the appearance of dry and damaged skin.
It is also an effective antioxidant: it improves collagen production and plumps skin, helping smooth out fine lines.
Retinyl Palmitate also enhances the appearance and feel of hair: it increases suppleness, sheen and body. In addition, it improves the texture of hair that has been physically or chemically damaged.
Side effects
Retinyl Palmitate can cause irritations. While it is true that it is gentler than retinol and is therefore a better choice for people with sensitive skin, it needs to be used in high concentrations for it to be effective, so it could still cause negative reactions in some people.
It can also cause sun sensitivity, so products containing retinyl palmitate should always be used in conjunction with a sunscreen.
In addiction, Retinyl Palmitate can oxidize and lose all its benefits if it isn’t stored properly.
Retinyl Palmitate should be avoid by women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breast-feeding.

Thanks hun!
Retinyl palmitate is not as active as retinol but for those who have sensitive skin, I guess it’ll work. I just took a look on your blog roll and you have quite a roll there!

You’re right Dao, it is not as effective as Retinol but if the concentrations are high enough it works. Problem is, most products have very small concentration of this ingredients so that it doesn’t really do nothing once applied.
I know, I follow a lot of beauty blogs! I can’t help it, there are lots of great ones!
Question: what amount is considered high concentration?
Hi Stephanie, I’m sorry but I couldn’t find that info in any of my sources. As a general rule though, the higher the ingredient is in the ingredients list the biggest the concentrations. Hope this helps.
