Ellagic Acid

What it is
Ellagic Acid is a compound that can be found in some vegetables, nuts and fruits such as raspberries, strawberries, pomegranates, walnuts and cranberries.

What it does
Ellagic Acid contains polyphenolic, a naturally occurring compound that has strong antioxidant properties. It protects from the skin damage (wrinkles and other signs of aging) caused by UVB rays. It works by blocking the productions of MMP (matrix metalloproteinase enzymes), which breaks down collagen in damaged skin cells and reduces ICAM, a molecule that causes inflammation. It also inhibits the formation of sun and age spots.
In addition, Ellagic Acid helps to prevent thickening of the skin and has antibacterial properties.

Side effects
Further studies need to be done on Ellagic Acid, but at the moment no serious side effects are known.
