Lip balms protect your lips from the drying effect of the cold, wind and heating. They also heal chapped and dry lips. And they can easily be made at home too! Here’s a few recipes you can try:
1. Jojoba Oil Lip Balm
Ingredients:
- 2 teaspoons of beeswax
- 2 ¼ tsp of jojoba oil
- grapefruit essential oil
- a small container
Melt the ingredients together and stir.
Remove it from heat and add six drops of grapefruit essential oil.
Pour the mixture into the container and let it cool for about 20 minutes.
2. Lemon Oil Lip Balm:
- ½ teaspoon of beeswax
- a teaspoon of petrolatum jelly
- 3 drops of lemon oil
- a small container
Melt the beeswax, add the petrolatum jelly and then the lemon drops.
Pour it into a container and let it cool for about 20 minutes.
3. Honey Lip Balm
Ingredients:
- 1 Tablespoon of petroleum jelly
- 1/3 Teaspoon of honey
- a small container
Melt the petrolatum jelly and honey together. Mix well and pour the mixture in the container. Let it cool.
Tips:
- To melt the ingredients together, you can either use a double boiler, or put them in the microwave.
- Let the wax mixture cool a bit before adding the essential oils, as they break apart when added to a hot mixture.
- You can either put your homemade lipbalm in a small pot or a tube. To put it in the tube, use a plastic pipette, but you need to be fast or the balm will harden in it.
- There are several types of beeswax available on the market. To make your own lipbalm I recommend pure and filtered beeswax. Pure means that it’s 100% beeswax, while filtered means the wax has been processed to get rid of any impurities such as dirt or pollen. If you want, you can use beeswax pellets, but they tend to be a bit more expensive.

You’re welcome Andrea! I’m glad to be of help. Let me know how the balm turned out
are these also not only shining your lips but are they good for your lips as well? (i’m making recipe #3)
Hi Kayle, yes they are good for the lips as well. Petrolatum jelly moisturizes and prevents water loss. Honey moisturizes too and also draws moisture from the envirmonet, leaving lips soft and smooth. Honey as also antioxidant and anti-irritant properties.
Let me know how the balm came out
Castor oil makes the balm glossy.
papayama, you’re right, thanks for sharing. I really like that look it gives lips.
Thank you so much for the recipes. I have a Brownie Troop and we will be doing natural spa treatments and I wanted them to make something they could take home with them. They honey lip balm is perfect! We may add a touch of Kool-Aid to give it fruity smells and flavors. The honey will make the Kool-Aid sweet. Very simple for a group of young girls. I am looking for really cute containers to put their finish product in now.
What a lovely idea MOGOLUV4! You’re welcome and I’m glad you found the recipe useful
I’m sure you all will have a great time making the lip balm!
Wow thank you for these recipes! I have been looking for a lip balm i could make without using beeswax (ive got none lol) so im going to make recipe #3 today. cant wait!
but how long should i keep it in the microwave for?
Meera, you’re welcome. I’m glad you find them useful and let me know how the lip balm turns out
I keep it in the microwave for only 2 or 3 minutes, but if the mixture isn’t fully melted by then, I leave it on for another minute or two.
Oh gosh it actually didnt turn out well but that’s just because I kept it in the microwave for 5-10 minutes which was alot! And I tried to make a smaller batch but I think I added to much honey so Im going to try it out again and Im sure it will come out right this time
Meera, that’s a shame but normal. Homemade recipes don’t always turn out well on the first attempt, they need a bit of practice. I’m sure it’ll turn out much better next time
