Benzoyl Peroxide is a white powder. It is a chemical in the organic peroxide family.
What it does
Benzoyl Peroxide is an anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial agent and reduces blemishes, pimples, blackheads and whiteheads. It kills Propionibacterium acnes, which is the bacterium that causes acne.
It also removes dead skin cells, preventing pores from clogging up.
Side effects
Benzoyl Peroxide can be drying, irritating and cause allergies. It can also cause sun sensitivity, so always apply sunscreen when using a product containing this ingredient.
Benzoyl Peroxide can generate free radicals so it should only be applied to the blemish.
