Dandruff is a very common condition, characterized by flaking, itchy scalp. It is caused by a fungus called malassezia. There are several solutions to treat the problem. However, they don’t work the same for everyone so you may need to experiment to find the best treatment for you. Also, it is better to alternate between different treatments than sticking to one, as that can become less effective over time. Here’s a list of ingredients that fight dandruff you should look for when purchasing a product:

Climbazole: antifungal agent that treats the cause of dandruff.

Coal Tar: antimicrobial agent that slows down cell turnover. Treats dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis.

Ketoconazole: an antifungal drug that fights the cause of dandruff. Treats seborrheic dermatitis as well.

Miconazole: an anti-fungal agent that treats dandruff.

Natural oils: many natural oils like castor oil, coconut oil and tea-tree oil are effective at treating dandruff.

Octopirox: anti-dandruff agent. Reduces the main symptoms of dandruff: itching and flaking.

Piroctone Olamine: an anti bacterial agent that fights the cause of dandruff.

Salicylic acid: it is classified as a BHA (beta hydroxy acid) and it has antimicrobial properties. It helps eliminate flakes by loosening the dead skin cells, making them easy to be washed out. However it can dry your scalp, so make sure you use a conditioner with it.

Selenium sulfide: a chemical that slows down cell turnover. Treats dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis. It can discolor blonde, gray or chemically colored hair.

Sulfur: antibacterial agent that helps to control dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and psoriasis. May irritate the scalp.

Zinc pyrithione: this derivative of zinc is an antifungal agent that prevents the growth of microorganisms that cause infections. It is effective against dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis (flaking of the skin).

I hate it too. Unfortunately I have very oily hair so I tend to have dandruff every now and then :(
