What it is:
Aloe vera is a plant from the lily family. Aloe vera gel comes from the cutting open of the leave and the collection of the mucilage that oozes out. The mucilage is 99.5% water, the other 0.5% is a combination of mucopolysaccharides (basic sugars), choline and choline salicylate.
What it does:
As stated above, Aloe Vera contains mucopolysacharides, a natural moisturizing factor. It improves hydration and soothes the skin.
Aloe Vera has anti-inflammatory and healing properties. It speeds healing by accelerating tissue repair and encouraging normal cell growth. It helps heals cuts, grazes, sunburns and insect bites. It is used in skincare products for acne, dermatitis and sensitive and irritated skin. It brings relief to allergies. However, it is unclear at this time if it is effective in treating psoriasis.
Aloe Vera has an anti anti-aging effect on skin. It has antioxidant and antibacterial properties and is a water-binding agent.
Side effects:
Applying aloe gel to the skin appears to be safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, although you should always consult your physician before using products containing this ingredients.
