Know Your Ingredients: Retinol

Posted by beautifulwithbrains | June 9, 2008 .

What it is:
Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A. It is a fat soluble and antioxidant vitamin. It is the form of Vitamin A most easily absorbed by the body.

What it does:
As stated above, retinol is an antioxidant, which means that it fights free radicals, protecting our skin from environmental damage.
It also helps, speed up the metabolism of the skin cells. Once inside them, retinol is converted into retinoic acid, which promotes skin cell renewal by increasing collagen and elastin production, contributing to younger, healthier skin.
It improves mottled pigmentation, skin texture, tone and color, and your skin’s hydration level.
It reduces wrinkles, fine lines and sun damage.

Side Effects:
It can cause the skin getting warmer, red in colour.
Also you may feel a mild sting.
Some people may experience itchiness and scaling.
It is best not to use it during the day, as sun exposure after applying retinol can increase skin irritation. Also, retinol breaks down in the presence of sunlight, becoming less effective.
It should be used during pregnancy only by the advice of a dermatologist.
