The skin is our largest vital organ and not only covers our body and protects us from bacterial invasion, it also is the canvas that we present to the world. Our face is the first thing people notice when they meet us, so it is essential that we take good care of it. As you grow and change, so does your skin. Our skin needs change with age, stress, sun exposure, change of seasons, hormonal changes and health problems. Different skins have different needs so, it is very important to determine our skin type in order to meet its needs. Before buying cosmetics and other products, do make sure that it is suitable for your skin type. Using the wrong skincare products is not only a waste of money but it can also damage your skin.
There are 5 basic skin types: normal, oily, dry, combination and sensitive. Here’s some information to determine your skin type.
NORMAL SKIN: It has a smooth texture, even tone and hardly visible pores. Skin feels soft and smooth. Break-outs are rare. There are no oily or dry patches.
OILY SKIN: It has an overproduction of oil which results in spots, black-heads and blemishes. It has a shiny appearance and a thick textures. Pores are large.
DRY SKIN: It lacks both sebum and moisture. It has a fine textures and looks transparent and fragile. It feels tight after cleansing and tends to have fine lines around the eyes and mouth. Pores are hardly visible. It peels and flakes without continuous moisturizing. It is often easily-irritated, sensitive to cold weather and has red patches.
SENSITIVE SKIN: It has a delicate appearance and is commonly dry with invisible pores; red spots are common. It is easily-irritated by temperature changes and cosmetics, which results in redness, stinging, burning or a rash. It has a tendency to develop swollen or broken capillaries as well as allergies. It usually sunburns easily.
COMBINATION SKIN: Almost everyone has a combination of this skin types. The most common combination is oily in the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) and dry in the cheeks and around the eyes.
Now that you have identified your skin type, choosing the right products for your skin will be easy.
